The Florida Keys is home to "The Road House." Local gangs have been attacking her bar, and she wants to recruit Dalton—even if it's just for a month, at $5,000 per week—to stop the chaos that occurs every night. Dalton first declines, but after attempting to end his life by putting his car on railroad tracks, he reconsiders and decides to go to Glass Key, the small made-up town where The Road House is situated on Afdah New Domain. Dalton enters the pub to find it in disarray, with fights breaking out on the dance floor, staff members who have given up, and no one to organize it all. Loud live music is playing in the background. One of the best performers currently working, Gyllenhaal, is faced with the challenging task of recreating one of the numerous parts that the great Patrick Swayze was known for. To his credit, he makes every effort to strike a balance between the wit and charm that are necessary to make Dalton our hero and the wrath that the original was unable to bring out of Dalton. Although it is one of Gyllenhaal's finer performances in a while, the other actors' efforts are wasted.
Dalton meets Ellie, the fiery doctor on call, while getting checked out for his scrapes and bruises at the hospital. Just like in the first movie, they begin to fall in love. Gyllenhaal and Melchior, an excellent actress best renowned for her breakthrough performance in The Suicide Squad, don't get along at all. Like the characters at the bar, they attempt to convince us that their romance is something we should care about, but throughout the course of the movie, it turns into a half-baked, forgotten plot that never quite works out. Ellie's father is the town's chief of police, and he, along with every other resident, is under the authority of Ben Brandt, a billionaire gangster's son who caused all the damage at The Road House and is the reason Dalton was taken to the village. In order to demolish the bar and construct a resort for affluent travelers, which he will use as a cover for smuggling drugs and cash, he needs the pub to close. All of the henchmen Brandt's team has sent his way have suffered fractured bones, so they haven't been able to stop Dalton.
